Pattern Addict's Design Garden

Hi everyone. Today I would like to introduce Gill Eggleston, the talented designer behind Pattern Addict.

Gill is an illustrator and surface pattern designer originally from Bolton. She studied Textile Design and Design Management at UMIST and lived in Manchester, UK for 20 years after university. This led to a fairly respectable career in industry until she moved to France in 2008.

Living in France brought about a change in direction and led her into working on a freelance basis.

Gill loves nature, outdoors and animals and photographing them all. She has a huge passion for ethnic art and loves old textiles, prints, ceramics and has collected a few bits along the way but she is drawn to vibrant colour and bold patterns.

Travel has been a big part of her life and probably a greater influence on her character than she realises (I guess at some point in my mid 20’s after seeing abject poverty on my travels it hit home how fortunate I am in life).

Gill has kindly given me an EXCLUSIVE look at her Bugs and Beasties illustrations!

The Bugstop - I Love Apples Me

Gill employs a unique, collage style to her illustrations. I love the textures and colours in this one. The caterpillar has so much character. I love his ‘crazy’ eyes! He looks ecstatic to see that apple!

The Bugstop - Big Ant Hill and Anteater

I love the ‘strips’ of sky and the repetition of shapes in this illustration. And they are so witty – Look at the Big Ant Hill’s Security! Gill brings her beasties to life!

The Bugstop - Flowers and Bees

Such a pretty illustration! Soft, pastel flowers and little bees flying amongst them!

The Bugstop - Ignorance is Bliss

Hee hee! Watch out bug, someone has their eye on you!

I love the pretty, watercolour effect of this illustration. The spider is beautifully designed with his polka dot body and ’embroidered’ eyes. I would love to see him and the flowers as a repeating pattern.

Tortoise Hitching a Ride

Another delightful illustration with two lovely tortoises helping each other out. Look at the lovely flower bed and the pretty colours.

Hoppity Hop The Carrot Thief is Off!

The titles of Gill’s illustrations make me smile! Hoppity Hop The Carrot Thief is Off!

I love the sweet bunny hopping and stealing carrots as he goes!

Wouldn’t you agree – Gill’s illustrations are full of wit and charm?

I asked Gill what was a DREAM she would like to come true:

Idealist dream – that people would stop being violent to each other and animals and live in harmony.

Personal dream – to illustrate a book with the kind of work shown here and have an successful career as a surface pattern designer 🙂

I hope your dreams come true, Gill Eggleston of Pattern Addict!
