Dreaming on a Star featured in Sligo Now Magazine

Hello everyone! Dreaming on a Star has been featured in the March issue of Sligo Now magazine. Would you like to have a look inside my home? You are welcome inside!

I had a lovely interview with Cliodhna McGowan where she asked me lots of questions about my design business and took photos of me in my home and studio.

If you want to find out more about the face behind Dreaming on a Star, have a look at the interview in the magazine (available in local newsagents).

I’ve included some photos of me at work (the one above wasn’t included in the magazine). This is a picture of me doodling with a nice cup of tea! Can you spot the Wonder Woman mug? That was a gift from my brother and sister-in-law. Some of the cushions on my couch are hand-made by me – they are very wonky, I hadn’t really got the hang of a sewing machine when I made them! The black-and-white picture on the wall (in white frame) is a really cool picture from Microcosm – it’s a sketch of different LP covers. I love collecting CDs, you can see some in the picture. I’ve been collecting since 1995 and really love album artwork. The other piece of artwork on the doors (top right of picture) is by my 5-year-old nephew. He’s so talented, I might hire him in future!  Oh yes I love twinkly lights – it’s like Christmas all year round!

This is a picture of my studio. I used to do all my work in a little corner of my living room but all my work started to spill over onto chairs and it became messy. So I moved everything up into a spare bedroom and I’m so glad I did. This room is south-facing and the light in here is so uplifting and conducive to work. I turned the bed on it’s side, covered it in wood and I have so much room now. I really love my black cat curtains from IKEA. I am very drawn to black cats for some reason. The little jukebox on the shelf is a printable from Claudine Hellmuth. I love her retro designs. Can you spot R2-D2 on the shelf too? I am a big mad Star Wars fan too. Oh look – more twinkly lights!

Dreaming on a Star’s studio (all tidied up!)

This is my studio all lovely and tidy! (It looks a bit messier now! :p ) I love this room so much – it’s so light and airy. When I worked downstairs, it was very dark and cramped.
I have so much space now and I get to look out onto my back garden when I work. The spare bed is hidden away on the right. I actually started to doodle on the wood as there was too much white space. The light box was a gift from my sister-in-law. I have book shelves at the other end of this room, with all my design books.

I am in the middle of renovating my back yard and I also have plans for my bedroom. I might blog about them in the future.

I hope you liked having a small peek inside my home and finding out a little bit about me. Thank you for reading.

Happy Christmas from Dreaming on a Star!

Hello everyone! December was an exceptionally busy one for Dreaming on a Star with 11 Christmas Markets!

But I managed to find some time to create an Advent doodle a day and here is the result. I challenged myself by using a limited palette and my influences were modern Scandi. I hope you like it!

In Love with the Sea

Hi everyone. I came across this beautiful Jules Verne quote only a few weeks ago and had to make my own version of it.
It really captures the powerful & spiritual hold the sea has over us. It’s hard to believe this quote is almost 150 years old. But it’s so relevant today to have a connection to nature in an increasingly disconnected world.

“The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite. ”

The Creative Life – Listen to your Spirit!

Hi everyone! The last few months, I’ve been feeling disillusioned and today I think I’ve made a breakthrough.

Listen to your Spirit - Words by Fleetwood Mac, Design by Dreaming on a Star by Tina Devins 2016

Listen to your Spirit – Words by Fleetwood Mac, Design by Dreaming on a Star by Tina Devins 2016

I got up at 7.30am on my day off to finish this illustration. I know in my heart and soul this is what I want to do. You can have the wildest dreams but life can be harsh and put you in your place.

A creative life is a bittersweet life – the highs are ecstatic but the lows are deep and dark. I’ve wanted to give up so many times but something keeps calling me back.

To borrow another’s words, ‘I’d rather fail at something I love than succeed at something I hate.’

Listen to your spirit – what is it telling you?

This post is dedicated to other creatives – I feel your pain but I share your joy!

(The illustration was inspired by Fleetwood Mac and the boundless sea & sky. Thank you )

Illustrating Words

Hi everyone. Dreaming on a Star has been illustrating lots of words! Song lyrics, lines from poems, phrases, etc. I’m a big fan of song lyrics and poetry. My favourite subject in school was English, so I’ve always had a love for the written word. And I adore typography, so it’s something I enjoy doing.

Song lyrics are a personal thing. For me, a particular line/phrase seems to burst out of a song and into my brain. I become obsessed with it. The words themselves are musical even without the melody. That’s how I see poetry – like song lyrics without melody, or maybe it should be the other way around – Song lyrics are poetry set to music!

Anyway, the above illustration is a quote from poet Emily Dickinson – “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” The concept of Hope is such a beautiful thing, especially if you’re going through a difficult time. The metaphor of the bird captures these aspirational qualities perfectly. That’s why I drew the word ‘Hope’ in a joyful way and gave it precedence on the page. (Just for fun I gave the birdie a name – Jeremiah Flaphinch!)

Illustration by Dreaming on a Star. Words by Van Morrison

Illustration by Dreaming on a Star, 2015. Words by Van Morrison

The above illustration happened after spending time in the sea and overdosing on Van Morrison! This is a line that jumped out at me from the song “Into the Mystic” – ‘Smell the sea and feel the sky, let your soul and spirit fly!’ How it captures the freedom and healing qualities of nature!

I love doodling and somehow these abstract doodles seemed to take on more familiar things – the white doodles look like exotic fishes and the top purple doodle looks like a surfboard! Maybe my subconscious mind is actually less abstract than I think!

I am a big fan of The Beatles and I own most of their back catalogue, but it’s funny how you might miss things. Although when it comes to song lyrics, I think particular lines might resonate with you more depending on your  circumstances or it could be you weren’t paying attention.

Anyway I was watching the TV show Mad Men, when ‘Tomorrow Never Knows‘ played at the closing credits. For such an iconic song, I’m surprised I missed this amazing line – ‘Listen to the Colour of Your Dreams’.  I love how it captures the trippy experience where your senses get mixed up! Also since my business is called Dreaming on a Star, I love anything related to dreams!
Thank you for reading

Family Tree for Father’s Day

Hi everyone! I made a Family Tree for my Dad for Father’s Day.

My Dad's Family Tree by Dreaming on a Star

My Dad’s Family Tree by Dreaming on a Star

Instead of including his children & grandchildren, I made it of his parents, his siblings and their children.
Dad is the youngest of 7 (a typical Irish Catholic family of the time!). He lost his Dad when he was 24. His sister died a few years ago and his other sister isn’t very well at the moment.
Unfortunately some of the cousins & in-laws are also no longer with us.
But this isn’t meant to be a sad post!

He was really happy with it. He spent hours looking at it!
I couldn’t believe it really!

I think as you get older, you comprehend what family actually means. The siblings that you climbed trees & shared rooms with are grown up and have families of their own.
You can see the endless cycle of life reaching back behind you and stretching out in front of you.
And you cherish the memories of those people that are no longer there but are all still a part of your family.
It was really lovely to give Dad a gift that meant so much to him.
